About Rick

There is another Rick Miranda in the U.S. who gets a lot of press in the scientific literature because he is a fairly active mathematician. I am not that Rick, though I have degrees in mathematics and physics.

Following some years working in experimental high energy physics, I settled in Holland and was employed by a major Dutch publisher for about 20 years doing work in a variety of ICT and content related areas: content management, online publishing, search technologies and so on.

After that I did a lateral move into the biotechnology sector and worked for Dutch biotech companies. This is somewhat different than high-energy physics, but I could amuse myself doing maths/physics in bioprocess control, and applying my content management background to improving my employer's documentation processes.

My favorite sport is Judo, but had to stop doing that after 2020 because of the Covid risk to members of my family. My interests/activities include physics, flamenco guitar, Latin percussion, rock-hunting, metal-detecting, astronomy, travel, household system administration and hot sauces. I make notes on hot sauces (hotness, flavor, etc.) but hemorrhoids hinder progress in this area.

I speak, read, and write in English, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, and French and work to keep these languages honed by doing freelance translations on the side. More details are given at TranslatorsCafe
